Congress Update: Native American Boarding Schools

Congress is facing a deadline to fund the government and avoid a shutdown. FCNL’s Rachel Overstreet has been lobbying with the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition and speaking at an Episcopal event about the issue. Legislation is gaining momentum in the House to establish a commission to formally investigate and document abuses in the Native American boarding school system, which operated for decades to forcibly assimilate children.

The Trump Administration has repeatedly undermined last March’s bipartisan appropriations law. We must ensure that this authoritarian playbook is not repeated, both to protect critical programs and to protect vital checks and balances in our democracy.
